La Cantera Chapel
LOCATION: MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
USE: WORSHIP
SCOPE: INTERNAL LIGHTING DESIGN
The approach to the lighting design of this chapel focused mainly on illuminating the vertical surfaces to create a larger sense of space, while putting accent on the displayed sacred art to provide visual targets and mark a strong directionality.
Concealed fittings in the wooden ledge graze the upper walls and illuminate the ceiling, enhancing the perspective view from the entrance and providing a base uniform illumination at the nave. Two layers of recessed downlights located under the ledge both illuminate the side corridors and provide accent on the iconography located at the side walls.
The arches were up-lit from the ledge level to frame the altar. Finally, the painting at the altar was lit from both sides, providing a strong focal point, and adding drama and contrast to the setting.
